Playing With Your Food

Found in the pages of WebUrbanist which focuses its blogging and discussions around Urban Design, Culture, Travel, Architecture and Alternative Art. A series of entries focus on the creation of artistic pieces through the usage of edible objects. Pictures of creations that use the shape and nature of the food to create another display. Cauliflower sheep, eggplant penguins, an acorn squash and asparagus umbrella all show the tremendous levels of creativity each artist holds in their hands. Other areas of the series focus on creative cake and desert design where computers, mountain ranges and other elaborate designs are sculpted from basic foods we don't spend a significant period of time thinking is 'art'.

In terms of 'food as art' this series takes it a bit more literally, sculpting and creating artistic pieces out of food, but the concept is not lost. As discussed in the readings what is truly important is the ability to take a step back and realize the potential of different things to be considered art. That intuition and creativity to cut the top off an acorn squash, use a asparagus stem as the handle held by a rotund duck made of garden variety vegetables... all of these items when separate would never be considered art, but the creation process has left us with first an object and second a wonderful use of organic material. While not being a perfectly plated and cooked fillet Mignon with garlic potatoes, au jou and a sprinkling of thyme for look, the creation of this basic food is quite nice.
